![]() Welcome
My name is Lory Newsom and I am a mixed media artist from the Northwest. I specialize in encaustic wax art. This is my favorite art form because it allows you to incorporate a wide variety of media and the wax takes on a life of its own — which is not repeatable from one piece to another. Encaustic — also known as "hot wax painting" — involves using heated beeswax and damar resin. Pure colored pigments are added to create a jewel like effect with translucent glazes that add an aged patina. Metal tools and special brushes are used to shape the paint before it cools, and heated elements are used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface. The painting is can also be layered with organic papers, ribbons, photos, stamps and other textures and objects. Much of my work gets a final coat of shellac which I torch and ignite, leaving a durable finish that gives the work a vintage feel. Thanks for stopping by for a visit.
